Simplified dosing: Progressive web app as a software solution for Ferring

With a mission to help people around the world build families and improve their quality of life, Ferring Pharmaceuticals is a global leader in reproductive medicine, maternal health, gastroenterology, urology, uro-oncology and microbiome. Headquartered in Switzerland, the international company relies on over 70 years of research and ingenuity to further develop its innovative therapeutic approaches and concepts. This benefits people in over 100 countries around the world in which Ferring products are available.

Ferring was looking for a new software solution for one of these products in 2018. The three existing applications used by doctors as a dosage aid were to be combined in a compatible Progressive Web App (PWA). The idea was to minimize maintenance costs and simplify expandability, thus saving time and effort in the long term. “We needed an application that was more sustainable and therefore also simplified the product’s maintenance activities and processes,” recalls Ilaria Bagnaro, Medical Device eHealth Project Manager at Ferring.

Starting the project with clear requirements

Ilaria Bagnaro met the BAYOOMED team at their stand at the B2B trade fair MEDICA. After an initial, very positive discussion on site, the experts at Ferring evaluated all possible options – and decided to work with BAYOOMED.

When the project started in 2019, Ferring already knew exactly what application was to be developed and had detailed stakeholder requirements for the dosing tool. The BAYOOMED team was now commissioned to carry out a feasibility study to evaluate various technological solutions for the dosing device – and ultimately found the best possible technology to meet the requirements.

Foundation for an ideal project start

It quickly became apparent how harmoniously the Ferring and BAYOOMED teams worked together – another important factor for success. “It’s about communication, coordination, mutual understanding of the various processes and, of course, the people involved in the project,” says Ilaria Bagnaro.

Nevertheless, challenges arose during the course of the project. This included the integration of two quality management systems (QMS), their documentation and unexpected changes to requirements during the development process.

“We found a good workflow during the project and learned to assess each other’s expectations even better.”

It is precisely because of this approach that an appreciative partnership of equals has developed over time between Ferring and BAYOOMED. “We are working together as partners on this project,” says Ilaria Bagnaro. “And even though the Progressive Web App is owned by Ferring, we can still see that the BAYOOMED team is working on it with as much passion as if it were their own.”

What else does the project manager value about the collaboration? “The flexibility of the team when it comes to making changes and the way they solve problems by thinking for themselves.”

“You can tell that BAYOOMED wants to make its customers happy. And that’s a level of professionalism that I really appreciate.”

At the same time, she adds, BAYOOMED does not implement tasks bluntly without questioning them. This is because the team thinks for themselves and takes responsibility for the PWA. “If there are ways to improve processes and make them more straightforward, BAYOOMED suggests them,” says Ilaria Bagnaro. BAYOOMED is not just about carrying out tasks, but the team takes care of the project – that is what makes the difference for them compared to other service providers.

The valuable exchange between the experts from Ferring and BAYOOMED continues to characterize the cooperation at eye level. Milestones within the joint project have already been reached – and several more will follow in the future.
